Cook County judge in court as defendant day after winning re-election – Chicago Tribune

Judge Brim – Okay-ed by Cook Co. voters

“I’m just happy the people voted me back in,” said Brim, who was suspended from her $182,000-a-year job in March after a wild week in which she was removed from her Markham courtroom after launching into a rambling 45-minute tirade and then, a day later, was charged with shoving a deputy at the Daley Center.

Soon after being charged with misdemeanor battery, a panel of supervising judges barred her from entering the county’s courthouses without a police escort. But neither that, nor the fact that numerous bar associations have recommended since 2000 that voters toss Brim from the bench, kept her from narrowly retaining her seat Tuesday.

Brim won 63.5 percent of the vote, according to preliminary totals, and needed only 60 percent to be retained for another six-year term. She hasn’t presided over a courtroom in seven months but continues to collect her paycheck.

Her attorney, James Montgomery Sr., said Brim has bipolar disorder and was in the midst of a manic episode when she shoved a deputy with both hands and threw a pair of keys at another in March.

“At that point she is absolutely psychotic in the sense of not having the ability to think straight or to even organize her thinking or to really remember a darn thing that happened,” he said.

A psychiatrist already has found Brim was legally insane at the time, Montgomery said. The finding means prosecutors cannot make their case, he said.

“I don’t know why they are wasting good, precious judicial resources and Judge Brim’s money on this case,” Montgomery said.

He said his client rebuffed efforts by prosecutors to get Brim to resign, something he said she will never do.

A spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office said only that prosecutors have twice declared themselves willing to start trial, but Brim has asked for continuances. Her case Wednesday was continued until next week after a second judge recused herself.

About 10 million people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which is an “immensely treatable disorder,” said Suzanne Andriukaitis, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Greater Chicago.

“For the most part, when they’re getting adequate treatment, they can return to their prior level of functioning,” she said. “She should be fine.”

Experts said Brim’s case highlights the difficulty of unseating a judge up for retention.

“This is so sad,” said Ann Lousin, a John Marshall Law School professor who has written about judicial selection. “It shows how difficult it is to get somebody out.

Local news reporter grills President Obama on Libya, […] | The Daily Caller  11:30 PM 10/26/2012

In an unusually direct and at times tense interview with Denver local news station KUSA, President Barack Obama on Friday admitted on two occasions that he doesn’t know whether the administration denied requests for military assistance by the U.S. [Consulate CIA annex] in [Benghazi,] Libya when it was besieged on Sept. 11.

“Were the Americans under attack at the consulate in Benghazi Libya denied requests for help during that attack? And is it fair to tell Americans that what happened [in Libya] is under investigation and we’ll all find out after the election?” anchor Kyle Clark asked at the top of the interview.

“The election has nothing to do with four brave Americans getting killed and us wanting to find out exactly what happened,” Obama replied. “Nobody wants to find out more what happened than I do. But we want to make sure we get it right.”

“Were they denied requests for help during the attack?” Clark asked again, referring to reports that the U.S. military could have intervened before militants killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens. (RELATED VIDEO: Father of slain Navy SEAL accuses White House of murder )

“Well, we are finding out exactly what happened,” Obama repeated. “I guarantee you that everyone in the State Department, our military, the CIA, you name it, had number one priority making sure that people were safe.

N.B. Some animals are more equal than others and have a more equal right to safety. Particularly ultimate strugglers, fellow travelers, and useful idiots running for re-election.

These were our folks and we’re going to find out exactly what happened.”

N.B. Note that our president’s sense of obligation seems to be supposed normal neighborly affection and not, explicitly,  an obligation based on an oath of office.

Clark then focused the interview on stimulus spending. […] At that point, beginning to sense the interview would take on an aggressive tone, Obama laughed nervously. […] Clark ended with one more question about what he claimed was the president’s apparent hypocrisy. […]

The uncomfortable interview was unusual, given that the president rarely allows the press the opportunity to ask him tough questions. According to ABC, a university professor found that Obama has been less accessible to the media — both at informal press pool events and press conferences — than his predecessors.  [My emphasis.]

White House e-mails blow up its Libya cover story – Right Turn – The Washington Post By Jennifer Rubin

Limited, obsolete truth meter lacks lowest range “Nose as long as a telephone wire” reading.

President Obama is playing the media and, in turn, the American people for fools on the Libya scandal. Reporters and columnists who carried his water have been hung out to dry. The White House cover story — namely that CIA got it all wrong and the White House (in urging us to believe the murder of four Americans was the result of a video riot gone bad) was telling us what it knew, when it knew — has been severely undercut. Three e-mails sent to the White House within two hours of the attack identify it as a terrorist operation and inform the White House that local jihadists with al-Qaeda connections claimed responsibility. Reuters reminds us:

U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the Benghazi assault, which President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials ultimately acknowledged was a “terrorist” attack carried out by militants with suspected links to al Qaeda affiliates or sympathizers. [/] Administration spokesmen, including White House spokesman Jay Carney, citing an unclassified assessment prepared by the CIA, maintained for days that the attacks likely were a spontaneous protest against an anti-Muslim film, [/] This was false. And we know now the White House knew better. Three separate e-mails were sent to the White House on Sept. 11:

The first email, timed at 4:05 p.m. Washington time — or 10:05 p.m. Benghazi time, 20-30 minutes after the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission allegedly began — carried the subject line “U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi Under Attack” and the notation “SBU”, meaning “Sensitive But Unclassified.” [/] The text said the State Department’s regional security office had reported that the diplomatic mission in Benghazi was “under attack. Embassy in Tripoli reports approximately 20 armed people fired shots; explosions have been heard as well.” [/] The message continued: “Ambassador Stevens, who is currently in Benghazi, and four … personnel are in the compound safe haven. The 17th of February militia is providing security support.”

[…] A third email, also marked SBU and sent at 6:07 p.m. Washington time, carried the subject line: “Update 2: Ansar al-Sharia Claims Responsibility for Benghazi Attack.” [/] The message reported: “Embassy Tripoli reports the group claimed responsibility on Facebook and Twitter and has called for an attack on Embassy Tripoli.” [/] Yet the president and his advisers repeatedly told us the attack was spontaneous reaction to the anti-Muslim video and that it lacked information suggesting it was a terrorist assault.

[…] Letting the president get away with this evasion routine is now more than mere evidence of media bias. The media’s passivity puts the country at risk in electing someone who may have been intentionally out to bamboozle the public or alternatively couldn’t be bothered to focus on the details of a terrorist attack of this importance. Media reticence in this regard signals to this and every future president that the national media are patsies.

Perhaps the next president will decide never to do serious news shows and never allow the access to him that is essential to allow the American people to hold him accountable for his conduct. If Obama gets away without ever having to account for his conduct in a major national security scandal before an election, there really is never any need for any president to submit to questions that might be embarrassing, inconvenient or revealing.

The media, already disdained and distrusted by a large segment of the population, might as well hang a “kick me” sign around their neck if they harrumph but then go meekly about their business for the next two weeks. Really, if they aren’t going to defend the public’s right to know, what good are they? [My emphasis.]

Our non-optimal president

What’s Not Optimal – By Peter Kirsanow – The Corner – National Review Online

Having a president who perpetuates a falsehood to the American people about the cause of a terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that resulted in the deaths of four Americans.
Having a president who uses $70,000 of taxpayers’ money to promote that falsehood on Pakistani television.
Having a president who broadcasts that falsehood to the world using the megaphone of a speech before the U.N. General Assembly.
Having a president who repeats the falsehood in front of the caskets of the four Americans killed in Benghazi.
Having a president who will casually wreak havoc on the life of an obscure video producer to protect that falsehood.
Having a president who, before a television audience of 65 million Americans, evades answering the question of “who denied enhanced security” to the consulate in Benghazi.
Having a president who feigns offense at the suggestion his machinations regarding the Benghazi debacle may have a political component.
Having a president who believes killing bin Laden constitutes a foreign policy.
Having a president who projects confusion, weakness, and diffidence to our enemies.
Having a media blind to the fact that this is a titanic scandal.

“Black Christians: Shame! Shame! Shame!”

One man’s opinion, to be sure. But perhaps, as William F. Buckley said of Sohlinetza, it is the voice of baptized humanity. Or, at least, in these heretical times, of bible-believing humanity.

[American Thinker] Articles: Black Christians: Shame! Shame! Shame! By Lloyd Marcus

Increasingly, I am hearing the following mantra/narrative from black Christians:”I’m voting for Obama because he is the lesser of the two evils.” This is an extremely weak attempt to justify their racism and loyalty to The Black Code (never side with a white against a fellow black).

From a Christian point of view, how can any Bible-believer conclude that Mitt Romney is more evil than Barack Obama?

Here are a few of the numerous things on Obama’s anti-Christian agenda. Obama supports same-sex marriage and has vowed to be an advocate for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities. Obama supports abortion, including infanticide (making it illegal to provide medical aid to a baby who has survived a failed abortion). Despite their strong will to survive, these babies must be left to die.

Massive governmental controls hidden in ObamaCare include forcing Christian institutions to fund abortion services against the teachings of their faith. Think about that: the federal government demanding that Christians betray their biblical beliefs. Forty Catholic groups are fighting back by suing the Obama administration. In typical liberal incremental fashion, our military has gone from a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy to being mandated under Obama to celebrate Gay Pride Month.

Indisputable facts are available everywhere exposing Obama to be the most anti-Christian president in U.S. history. I know some of you black Christians will continue to stick your heads in the sand, refusing to accept the truth. Woe be unto you. Racism is evil, whether it comes from whites or from blacks blindly worshiping Obama because of his skin color.

So, black Christians, tell me Romney’s stated anti-Christian agenda. Grasping at straws, some will say Romney is a Mormon and Mormonism does not jive with Christianity. Well, you may have a point. However, Romney has not attacked Christianity or pledged to force Christians to betray their faith. Obama is boldly and dictatorially implementing his anti-Christian agenda. Regrettably, many of you black so-called followers of Christ realize who Obama really is and what he is doing. And yet you will vote for him anyway because of your sick addiction to racial politics.

I have also heard Christians say, “OK, I admit that Obama is destroying America, but I cannot vote for a Mormon.” Such thinking is illogical. Imagine: your home is on fire, and your family is trapped inside. The Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang arrives at the scene, offering to go inside to rescue your loved ones. How absurd would it be to reject their “God-sent” help because you disapprove of the Hell’s Angels’ lifestyle?

Remember this old joke? A guy was trapped on his roof during a flood. He prayed for help. Various volunteers came to his aid in boats. The man rejected them all, waiting for God to save him. The foolish man drowned. In Heaven, the man asked God why he did not answer his prayer. God replied, “I did answer your prayer. You rejected everyone I sent.”

America is on fire, folks. Romney/Ryan are the available firefighters. Thus, I believe they are “God-sent.”

I asked a black minister friend to further explain this “lesser evil” thing. He said the “lesser evil” in his mind is the economy. While not disputing Obama’s anti-Christian agenda, Obama still wins his vote because he believes that Romney/Ryan’s plan will further the decline of America’s economy. In essence, this black minister of the Gospel is saying he values the economy over God’s condemnation of homosexuality, over the lives of babies, and over freedom of worship.

And by the way, this minister thinking that Obama’s economic plan of spending our way to prosperity is superior to Romney/Ryan’s plan is idiotic, nonsensical, and absurd. I cannot believe that my friend is that stupid. I believe that citing the economy as his reason for voting for Obama is a weak excuse to mask his racism, pure and simple.

To all you Obama-is-the-lesser-of-two-evils black Christian voters, you should be ashamed of yourselves. You ain’t foolin’ nobody. You are racists! May God have mercy on your souls.

Benghazi: Osama’s Revenge on Obama
By James Lewis
Talk about chickens coming home to roost. Talk about the Mother of All Fiascos. It’s the revenge of Osama bin Laden from the bottom of the ocean, and the message is plain: al-Qaeda is very much alive, and America is a paper tiger.

The Middle East is beginning to fall apart — Iran just sent a spy drone over Israel’s sensitive defense installations, and the IDF waited hours to react; Turkey forced down a Syrian arms plane, and al-Qaeda’s Al Zawahiri openly assaulted the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi in a six-hour attack, working through al-Qaeda in the Maghreb (AQIM), while the glorious Libyan friends did nothing as our ambassador was being raped and murdered. The guards called for help, and nobody responded. A police car fled the scene. The other ten cop cars requested by the consulate never showed up.

The Libyan regime knew. It had to know.

In Afghanistan, our soldiers are being murdered by the same Afghan troops we are training to take over after we leave. They can see the weak horse and the strong horse, and they are trying to tell the strong horse what side they are on. These folks used to be on our side, but they know which way the storm is blowing.

Remember: host governments are always responsible for the safety of accredited diplomats and soldiers. Always, always, always. Embassies have a U.S. Marine color guard — not for protection, but for a symbolic presence. Host governments have overwhelming power: armies, cops, and a huge intelligence apparatus. In Afghanistan, believe it or not, we are the guests of the regime. If Afghan soldiers are killing us, it’s because the regime is trying to save its butt, now that we have bowed down to the Taliban.

When Ayatollah Khomeini staged the takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979, he denied any responsibility. Jimmy Carter was weak enough to do nothing for a whole year, when the answer is right in the textbooks: the host government is always responsible for the security of diplomats. As soon as Reagan beat Carter, the U.S. hostages were released pronto, because Khomeini was not ready to die. His point was made.

Interesting footnote: Khomeini’s runner to the embassy terrorists was a kid named Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. It was a big career move for him.

America may not have a memory, but the Islamists do. They’ve got our number, and they knew how far to push. They are not interested in you and me — not yet — but in the 1.4 billion Muslims who are quietly loving the revenge of Allah. This is how al-Qaeda gets notorious, wealthy, and powerful. This is how Islamists make recruits all over the world, including the West. Now Islamist throwbacks own Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Gaza. America is asleep at the switch, and Islamic fascists are on the march. Women in the millions are putting on chadors, niqabs, and black tents, not because they want to, but because they are afraid not to. They are right to be afraid. Our raving feminists are silent as the grave.

Remember: both our Cairo Embassy and our Benghazi Consulate were attacked, with a black al-Qaeda flag waving over the ruins for the international cameras. Al-Qaeda’s signature is simultaneous attacks in different places. This was the biggest victory for AQ since 9/11/01. We handed it to them. Obama bowed down to King Abdullah in public. Hillary has been videoed a thousand times walking with Huma, both wearing head scarves.

Signals. In the Muslim world, if you send an openly gay ambassador to Libya, you might as well paint a target on him. If you make Hillary — the betrayed wife of President Bill — your secstate, expect the outraged patriarchal pride of the throwbacks to take revenge. You think Hillary being secstate is wonderful and progressive, and they take it as a personal insult and demand bloody revenge. They are laughing at her now — a weak woman with a weaker president.

In Egypt and Libya, our glorified “Arab Spring” buddies did nothing while our sovereign territory went up in flames, our diplomats were shot and abused, and our national security secrets were stolen. So-called “spontaneous protests” exploded in fourteen Muslim countries at the same time as the Cairo and Benghazi assaults. Our diplomats have now been pulled out of a reported 20 Muslim countries, including Tunisia, Mali, Algeria, Libya.

It was the eleventh anniversary of 9/11/01, and our State Department idiotically pulled the U.S. Marines and military contractors out of Libya — in favor of radical Islamists hired at $13,000 per year. Instead of U.S. Marines to guard the embassies with machine guns those State Department moneys went to Green Chevy Volts.

To show them we mean no harm. How they must be laughing at us.

Hours before the Benghazi attack on Ambassador Chris Stevens, al-Qaeda released a web video from Ayman Al Zawahiri — bin Laden’s second in command. According to the Israeli intelligence-linked news site :

Zawahiri called on the faithful to take revenge on the United States for liquidating one of the organization’s top operatives, Abu Yahya al-Libi in June by a US drone in Northwestern Pakistan. Its release was a “go signal” for the hit team to attack the US diplomats in Benghazi.
Why Benghazi? Because al-Libi means “the Libyan.” Obama’s U.S. predator killed Yahya al-Libi in Pakistan, and al-Qaeda takes instant revenge on our top diplomat in Libya.

Why the timing? It was 9/11, hours after the United States held memorial ceremonies for the victims, broadcast around the world.

It may not make sense to us, but it makes all the sense in the world to radical Muslims, al-Qaeda, Taliban, Salafists, Wahhabis, suicidal Twelvers, martyrdom freaks of Hezb’allah, and neo-Ottomans. There are hundreds of these little sects around the world, all whipped up every Friday by the local imam, sheikh, or other revenge fantasist.

Signals. They understand them. We have a media and political class that throws sand in our eyes. They are screaming at us, and we are pretending not to hear.

We now know why the administration has been running like hell from the assaults in Benghazi and Cairo. Weeks of flimsy lies, day after day, starting with Obama’s speech to the United Nations, where he blamed a shoddy web video made by a Christian Copt from Egypt (“a resident of Southern California”) who was promptly put in jail, presumably to protect his life. The BBC instantly blamed the video on 100 Jews — or was it 500? — who paid for the cruddy video. Anything to deflect blame in those crucial hours. Then the BBC “corrected” its lie after it went around the globe.

Our U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice is still running the same lies Obama told weeks ago. Hillary and the State Department are telling different lies every day; Obama is blaming the intelligence agencies, who are leaking right back; and somebody is blaming the Pentagon today.

This would be a scream if it wasn’t so dangerous.

Al-Sharq Al-Awsat is an Arab newspaper published in London, and it’s found a Libyan guard who survived that night, named ‘Ali. (Translation by ; formatting in original.)

… Ali was part of a Special Protection Unit, which comprises members of the February 17 Brigade, a Libyan militia comprising radical Islamists which was established following the Libyan revolution.

Back in March 2012, the U.S. Consulate had hired members of the Special Protection Unit to guard its compound.

‘Ali and others in his team describe … the embassy’s poor cooperation when, following the June 2012 attack on the embassy,(when a bomb exploded outside the Benghazi consulate) they requested upgrades to their weapons and improvement of the security tools at their disposal.

‘Ali said that during the attack, after the embassy was stormed by some 50 men, … his team’s calls for backup, in Arabic and English, went unanswered by both the Americans inside the embassy and by the February 17 Brigade headquarters less than two miles away.

… Police Vehicle Outside Consulate “Fled The Scene”; No Response To Libyan Guards’ Call For Backup

‘Ali … was taken by surprise by the attack, which he said “seemed to come out of nowhere.” He said that he first noticed that the police car outside the consulate – an additional layer of security provided by the Libyan government – “took off quickly, fleeing the scene.”

He then saw some 50 men, mostly unarmed, approaching the consulate by foot on the dirt road leading up to it, headed by eight masked men, two of whom carried RPGs. … Shortly thereafter, one of the attackers fired three (RPG) rounds at the main gate, while others stormed the consulate wall.

…the great majority of the attackers were Libyans from Benghazi, and some of them were masked. … four of the attackers, all apparently masked, were the leaders of the group, because … all the others seemed to listen to them and to follow their orders.

… one of the four leaders had worn a Pakistani-type garment, and carried a golden pistol. A second, whom he described as a “short, fat, irritable” man about 5’4″ with a beard visible under his mask carrying an AK-47, asked him about where the Americans were inside the consulate. A third man, he said, who was about 5’7″, wore a long robe.”

This is the age of the web, and the U.S. State Department must have been following every moment of the six-hour attack. They knew about September 11. They knew about Zawahiri’s video. They knew Al-Libi was assassinated on President Obama’s direct orders in Pakistan. They had received distress calls from the U.S. ambassador in Libya.

They knew. If they didn’t know, they should resign en masse.

If the State Department knew, Hillary must have known. If Hillary knew, Obama must have been told. This is the age of instant communication. Didn’t somebody have a cell phone?

They knew and did nothing. / It was 3 am, and nobody picked up the phone.

If Americans can’t figure this out, the bad guys will. They already know. Only the ignorant and foolish don’t get it.

Mark Steyn: ‘Politicized’ Benghazi distracts from Big Bird | obama, four, security – Opinion – The Orange County Register

“The entire reason that this has become the political topic it is, is because of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.”

Thus, Stephanie Cutter, President Obama’s deputy campaign manager, speaking on CNN about an armed attack on the 9/11 anniversary that left a U.S. consulate a smoking ruin and killed four diplomatic staff, including the first American ambassador to be murdered in a third of a century. To discuss this event is apparently to “politicize” it and to distract from the real issues the American people are concerned about. For example, Obama spokesperson Jen Psaki, speaking on board Air Force One on Thursday: “There’s only one candidate in this race who is going to continue to fight for Big Bird and Elmo, and he is riding on this plane.”

She’s right! The United States is the first nation in history whose democracy has evolved to the point where its leader is provided with a wide-body transatlantic jet in order to campaign on the vital issue of public funding for sock puppets. Sure, Caligula put his horse in the Senate, but it was a real horse. At Ohio State University, the rapper introduced the President by playing the Sesame Street theme tune, which, oddly enough, seems more apt presidential walk-on music for the Obama era than “Hail To The Chief.” […]

Obviously, Miss Cutter is right: A healthy mature democracy should spend its quadrennial election on critical issues like the Republican Party’s war on puppets rather than attempting to “politicize” the debate by dragging in stuff like foreign policy, national security, the economy and other obscure peripheral subjects. But, alas, it was her boss who chose to “politicize” a security fiasco and national humiliation in Benghazi. At 8.30 p.m., when Ambassador Stevens strolled outside the gate and bid his Turkish guest good night, the streets were calm and quiet. At 9.40 p.m., an armed assault on the compound began, well-planned and executed by men not only armed with mortars but capable of firing them to lethal purpose – a rare combination among the excitable mobs of the Middle East. There was no demonstration against an Islamophobic movie that just got a little out of hand. Indeed, there was no movie protest at all. Instead, a U.S. consulate was destroyed and four of its personnel were murdered in one of the most sophisticated military attacks ever launched at a diplomatic facility.

This was confirmed by testimony to Congress a few days ago, although you could have read as much in my column of four weeks ago. Nevertheless, for most of those four weeks, the President of the United States, the Secretary of State, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and others have persistently attributed the Benghazi debacle to an obscure YouTube video – even though they knew that the two events had nothing to do with each other by no later than the crack of dawn Eastern time on Sept. 12, by which point the consulate’s survivors had landed safely in Tripoli.

To “politicize” means “to give a political character to.” It is a reductive term, capturing the peculiarly shrunken horizons of politics: “Gee, they nuked Israel. D’you think that will hurt us in Florida?” So media outlets fret that Benghazi could be “bad” for Obama – by which they mean he might be hitting the six-figure lecture circuit four years ahead of schedule. But for Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, it’s real bad. They’re dead, over, gonesville. Given that Obama and Secretary Clinton refer to Stevens pneumatically as “Chris,” as if they’ve known him since third grade, why would they dishonor the sacrifice of their close personal friend by peddling an utterly false narrative as to why he died? You want “politicization”? Secretary Clinton linked the YouTube video to the murder of her colleagues even as the four caskets lay alongside her at Andrews Air Force Base – even though she had known for days that it had nothing to do with it. It’s weird enough that politicians now give campaign speeches to returning coffins. But to conscript your “friend’s” corpse as a straight man for some third-rate electoral opportunism is surely as shriveled and worthless as “politicization” gets.

In the vice-presidential debate, asked why the White House spent weeks falsely blaming it on the video, Joe Biden took time off between big toothy smirks to reply: “Because that was exactly what we were told by the intelligence community.” That, too, is false. He also denied that the government of which he is nominally second-in-command had ever received a request for additional security. At the risk of “politicizing” things, this statement would appear also to be untrue.

Instead, the State Department outsourced security for the Benghazi consulate to Blue Mountain, a Welsh firm that hires ex-British and Commonwealth Special Forces, among the toughest hombres on the planet. The company’s very name comes from the poem “The Golden Journey To Samarkand,” whose words famously adorn the regimental headquarters of Britain’s Special Air Service in Hereford. Unfortunately, the one-year contract for consulate security was only $387,413 – or less than the cost of deploying a single U.S. soldier overseas. On that budget, you can’t really afford to fly in a lot of crack SAS killing machines, and have to make do with the neighborhood talent pool. So who’s available? Blue Mountain hired five members of the Benghazi branch of the February 17th Martyrs’ Brigade and equipped them with handcuffs and batons. A baton is very useful when someone is firing an RPG at you, at least if you play a little baseball. There were supposed to be four men heavily armed with handcuffs on duty that night, but, the date of Sept. 11 having no particular significance in the Muslim world, only two guards were actually on shift.

Let’s pause right there, and “politicize” a little more. Liberals are always going on about the evils of “outsourcing” and “offshoring” – selfish vulture capitalists like Mitt Romney shipping jobs to cheap labor overseas just to save a few bucks. How unpatriotic can you get! So now the United States government is outsourcing embassy security to cheap Welshmen who, in turn, outsource it to cheaper Libyans. Diplomatic facilities are U.S. sovereign territory – no different de jure from Fifth Avenue or Mount Rushmore. So defending them is one of the core responsibilities of the state. But that’s the funny thing about Big Government: the bigger it gets, the more of life it swallows up, the worse it gets at those very few things it’s supposed to be doing. So, on the first anniversary of 9/11 in a post-revolutionary city in which Western diplomats had been steadily targeted over the previous six months, the government of the supposedly most powerful nation on Earth entrusted its security to Abdulaziz Majbari, 29, and his pal, who report to some bloke back in Carmarthen, Wales.

In the days before the attack, Joe Biden had been peddling his Obama campaign slogan that: “Bin Laden is dead, and General Motors is alive.” The first successful terrorist attack on U.S. sovereign territory since 9/11, and on the very anniversary and by al-Qaida-linked killers, was not helpful to the Obama team. And so the nature of the event had to be “politicized”: Look, over there – an Islamophobic movie! “Greater love hath no man than this,” quoth the President at Chris Stevens’ coffin, “that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Smaller love hath no man than Obama’s, than to lay down his “friend” for a couple of points in Ohio. | ©MARK STEYN | FOLLOW US @OCRegLetters

Catholic Bishops: Biden Didn’t Tell the Truth About Obamacare’s Abortion Drug Mandate | The Weekly Standard

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops released a statement Friday saying that Vice President Joe Biden falsely described Obamcare’s contraception and abortifacient mandate:

Last night, the following statement was made during the Vice Presidential debate regarding the decision of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to force virtually all employers to include sterilization and contraception, including drugs that may cause abortion, in the health insurance coverage they provide their employees:

“With regard to the assault on the Catholic Church, let me make it absolutely clear. No religious institution—Catholic or otherwise, including Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital—none has to either refer contraception, none has to pay for contraception, none has to be a vehicle to get contraception in any insurance policy they provide. That is a fact. That is a fact.”

This is not a fact. The HHS mandate contains a narrow, four-part exemption for certain “religious employers.” That exemption was made final in February and does not extend to “Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital,” or any other religious charity that offers its services to all, regardless of the faith of those served.

(CNN) — British rugby league player Paul Wood has lost a testicle after a collision during the English sport’s showpiece final at Manchester’s Old Trafford stadium on Saturday.

But, as Oscar Wilde informed us, “Life is the imitation of art.”

Rugby player loses testicle after final defeat –

Wood was playing for the Warrington Wolves against Leeds Rhinos in the Super League Grand Final.

The prop sustained the injury one minute into the second half, but managed to play the rest of the match before seeking treatment. [My emphasis.]

Despite Wood’s determined effort, Warrington lost the match 26-18 to 2011 champions Leeds.

“Ruptured my right testicle, got a knee one minute into the second half, had to have it removed,” tweeted the 30-year-old father of two.

Showing his sense of humor remained intact, he later tweeted: “Just coming out the hospitalto go home… Seriously feel like I’ve left something?

“Tony Smith (Warrington coach) did say in his pre-match team talk last night ‘your balls are on the line here guys!’ I didn’t think he meant literally.”

Rugby League is similar to Rugby Union, although each team has 13 players rather than 15.

In addition to being played in Britain, the sport is also popular is Australia and New Zealand.

“Rugby is the only sport for the truly tough. All the rest are sissy sports. How come you’re not tough enough to play Rugby? Like my friends, the Washington Furies.” (My frequent declaration to athletic friends when I was a proud social member of the Washington Women’s Rugby Football Club.)

World now in state of “chasis”

“The whole world is in a terrible state of chasis.”

Dublin in 1921 was the focus of worldwide “chasis” as experienced by “Captain” Jack Boyle (in nautical cap).

If Scotland is obviously in “chasis”, it clinches the assessment of the wise that the entire real world is now in the state ascribed to the world as seen by “Captain” Boyle during the Irish civil war of the 1920’s.

The latest indicator of the deplorable state of the Nation that “invented the modern world and most everything in it” as reported by the world’s last great (but fading)  newspaper.

Nine in ten Scots ‘living off state’s patronage’ – Telegraph

Almost nine out of 10 Scottish households take more from the public purse than they contribute in taxes thanks to a “rotten system” of state patronage, the Tory party conference will hear on Monday.

Ruth Davidson, the Scottish Conservative leader, is to highlight official figures showing that only 283,080 households north of the border – 12 per cent of the total – pay more in tax than they receive in public services.

She will tell delegates that, because the public sector is seen as the key provider of everything from housing to employment, state spending now accounts for more than half Scotland’s wealth.

She will blame Alex Salmond, the SNP First Minister, and his Labour predecessors for nurturing a “corrosive sense of entitlement” among voters that has prevented her party making a comeback in Scotland.

Miss Davidson will argue this Left-wing “stranglehold” suits Labour and the SNP but has made it difficult for the Tories as so many voters are reliant on the public sector for their household income.

But the Nationalists described it as her “Mitt Romney moment”, in a reference to the Republican presidential candidate’s comments that 47 per cent of Americans pay no income tax and are dependent on the state.

According to the most recent figures, Scotland contributed 9.6 per cent of Britain’s tax take and accounted for 9.3 per cent of public spending.

Her strongly worded attack on state patronage follows David Cameron’s warning to the Scottish Tories last autumn that they had no excuse for their dismal election performances.

But Miss Davidson will tell the conference that Scotland’s “staggering” and “frightening” reliance on the public sector must be taken into account.

“The rotten system of patronage, which denies so many people real choices in their lives, has created a corrosive sense of entitlement which suits its political gang masters,” she will say. “Only 12 per cent are responsible for generating Scotland’s wealth. I wonder how many of them work on public sector contracts.”

Referring to her party’s dismal election record, the Scottish Conservative leader will conclude: “If the gang master state is the only provider people can see for their housing, education and employment, it’s no surprise those who seek to break the stranglehold find barriers in their way.”

Anyone who challenges the status quo is deemed an “enemy of the state”, she will argue, before claiming this is the real reason some political commentators have written off the Scottish Tories.

She will argue that Labour and the SNP still blame her party for problems that are their responsibility, pointing out that the former has been in control of some of Glasgow’s most deprived areas for decades.

Miss Davidson supported her claims by publishing figures from the Office for National Statistics, which showed the average Scottish household consumes £14,151 more in public services every year than it pays in tax.

Even the families in the middle income groups consume around £20,000 more in state spending than they contribute.

However, those in the top 10 per cent pay £17,205 more in tax than they receive in public services.

Kenny Gibson, a Nationalist MSP, described it as Miss Davidson’s “Mitt Romney moment”. He added: “At least Mitt Romney only insulted around half of Americans, while Ruth Davidson believes almost 90 per cent of Scots do not ‘contribute’ to society.”

Miss Davidson will also tell English party colleagues that their support is required if the Unionist campaign is to win a decisive victory in the referendum on independence, something she will argue is necessary if the separatists are not to try to hold another vote soon.
