Names of God

September 28, 2012

From a forum post.

Interesting thread. Sorry not to discover it earlier.

Scripture seems to distinguish the Creator from other “gods” with two terms.

One. The Most High God. This is the title used of His relationship to those nations and / or persons who are not in covenant with Him.

Two. Jehovah. This is the Name used in His covenant relation to persons and to Israel (particularly the faithfull remnant). It is translated as GOD and LORD in many versions. The septuagint translates it as “kurios”, the word widely used with the meaning “lord” in a variety of senses. The New Testament application of this word to Jesus thus had a very special meaning for those whose bible was the septuagint.
