Alcoholic progress at the Rose Supper Club

March 31, 2012

Rose Supper Club | Food Stamp Friday | Symbol of progressive progress.

Alcoholic progress at the Rose Supper Club.

In the bad old days before the New Deal, Fair Deal, New Frontier, Great Society, New Covenant, and the hopey, changey, stuff had improved the lot of the less fortunate among us, an improvident alcoholic father might spend his entire pay check in the tavern while his wife and children starved.

But, today, in the Rose Supper Club they cannot legally take his food stamps in return for booze. Not even on Food Stamp Friday.

And some say that there is no such thing as progressive progress.

Alabama club starts ‘Food Stamp Friday’ promotion | The Montgomery Advertiser | montgomeryadvertiser.com

“MONTGOMERY — A nightclub just half a mile away from the state Department of Human Resources in Alabama’s capital city has come up with a unique theme night involving food support for needy families.

The Rose Supper Club in Montgomery, Ala. will start “Food Stamp Friday” theme nights in April. Manager Harman Wilson says the night is meant to complement the club’s other theme nights, such as Fat Tuesday, Karaoke Wednesday or Thirsty Thursday.

Wilson says patrons will not be able to use their food stamps to purchase alcoholic beverages. He says he hopes the novel approach will draw people to the club.

Human Resources Department spokesman Barry Sparks says the department does not approve of the promotion. He says food assistance benefits are meant to provide nourishment for hungry families.” http://on.mgmadv.com/HuK2E7
