Living up to great name

Great news from ancestral home town. Having the same last name as a municipality is not usually a mark of honor. Often such a line begins because a woman is not sure who the boy’s father is, but is sure that he is a local lad. Those named Washington or Lincoln have a similar shadow cast on their lineage. But, I confidently await the day when archeologists or scholars or antiquarians will discover that my line began with a squire sent by William the Conqueror to keep order among the natives of the then Parish of Batley. A Norman military officer who became known as Roger of Batley.

Batley were off to an extremely strong start this afternoon, scoring their first try within the first few minutes. It wasn’t too long until Wakefield were back… and then within the second half they were a couple of tries in front. Thankfully, Batley were on superb form and with two tries quite near the end, we managed a win of 18-14. We walked out with our heads held high, smiling smugly at the super-league fan-boys
