Abortion and infanticide

March 2, 2012

Today abortion, tomorrow infanticide.

They argued: “The moral status of an infant is equivalent to that of a fetus   in the sense that both lack those properties that justify the attribution of   a right to life to an individual.”

Rather than being “actual persons”, newborns were “potential persons”. They   explained: “Both a fetus and a newborn certainly are human beings and   potential persons, but neither is a ‘person’ in the sense of ‘subject of a   moral right to life’.

The experts are wrong, of course, about the beginning of an individual human person.

But our commonly held traditional notion of the individual human person beginning at conception does not seem to be supported by scripture.

The individual person begins when the Father of spirits provides a spirit to a unique human biological entity.

Genesis 2 and Luke 2 indicate that this may well happen after the physical body is shaped.

The beginning of brain waves may possibly be an indicator as the absence of brain waves is a sure indicator of death.

Very early abortion is wrong but probably not the equivalent of murder. (The Old Testament differences of penalty in causing a death through negligence and causing a mis-carriage through negligence is also of interest.)

The infanticide of the ancient world seems preferable to our modern methods of population control.

. The decision was a family one made by the head of the family, generally the woman’s father-in-law.
. They took a look at the child before deciding to do without it.
. The method was generally exposure to nightime temperatures in an area generally known for the purpose. Pain was minimised and the possibility of informal adoption was established. Moses survived in such a manner to be a great instument of blessings.
