The value of “Christian” fasting

January 23, 2012

From a forum thread on Christian fasting.

I have fasted for four or more days several times in order to learn more about my peculiar food sensitivities.

It has been a useful experience in many ways. I recommend it. (Along with testing for food sensitivities But might be safest to consult about your own possible medical vulnerbilities.)

It can be made quite comfortable. Christian fasting types do not seem to always appreciate this. They seem to think that the value of a spiritual exercise is proportional to the suffering of the flesh.

A “spiritual” benefit may come through the loss of normal toxic food by-products in the blood and the availability of energy for thought that might be otherwise used for digestion. And the time used for cooking and eating becomes available for other things.
